Prolonged use of ibuprofen may have negative effects on male fertility
Having a child is a task in which many factors influence. From the economic and labor situation of the future parents to the physical characteristics of them. There are times when, due to various problems, it is more difficult for fertilization to occur and in some cases this is an impossible mission because of the infertility of one of the spouses.
Although in some cases it is impossible to avoid infertility, in others it can be achieved leaving aside some harmful activities such as smoking. Now, a new study from the National Institute of Health and Medical Research of France, INSERM, has determined that a regular and prolonged use of ibuprofen increases the risk of male sterility.
Long-term effects
The mentioned study involved 31 men young people between 18 and 35 years old, all of them with a healthy lifestyle where sport was present. An aspect that supposed in the majority of the cases an increase of the consumption of ibuprofeno to treat muscular pains. The investigation determined that abuse of this drug could be considered when ingested 1,200 milligrams per day for 6 weeks.
The analyzes showed that this consumption of ibuprofen resulted in a hormonal alteration that led to compensated hypogonadism. A state in which men of advanced age are and which entails dangers for male fertility. This was because the abuse of this drug was related to an increase in the pituitary hormone, responsible for regulating the production of testosterone.
The study also recalls how other research has shown that the drug inhibits a hormone produced by the cells of Sertoli, the inhibin B, regulator of the follicle-stimulating hormone responsible for provoking desire among the spouses.
Prevent infertility
Not only the consumption of ibuprofen influences male fertility. There are other factors that can help prevent sterility in men. These are some tips that are offered from the American Association of Pregnant Women:
