Excess fructose in pregnancy could damage the placenta

The welfare of the child is a concern of another parent, even before it is born. Since the pregnancy can begin the care of the little ones while attending to the needs of the fetus and taking care of the mother pregnant. For this reason, it is advisable to follow the recommendations of obstetricians and the news that come thanks to scientific research.

An example is the work done by the Faculty of Pharmacy of the San Pablo University, CEU. In this research, a link between the excess of fructose in the pregnant and problems in the placenta of pregnant women. Some data that also help prevent possible metabolic diseases in children once they reach maturity.

Beware of sweeteners

This study explains that fructose is present in pregnant women in many ways, especially through the sweeteners that are used to replace sugar. Many of these items are composed of corn syrup, which in turn has a high dose of fructose.

These sweeteners are also present in other articles present in the diet of pregnant women such as pastries, ice cream or desserts low in sugar. Already in 2012 a study revealed that drinks with high fructose levels were related to the presence of preeclampsia in pregnant women. On this occasion, the research focused on the consumption of this ingredient and the oxidative state in pregnant rats and their fetuses.

Those animals that took fructose showed a low level of lipid oxidation in plasma. For their part, the fetuses did carry levels of oxidation high in both plasma and liver. This means that pregnant placentas exposed to fructose had oxidative stress and a lower amount of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), which is a powerful antioxidant agent. All these negative effects were exclusive of the fructose consumption, since they were not observed in the other two groups.

One more fact that reveals that how it affects the diet of the mother It has effects on the baby and on the gestation process. "Our purpose is to raise awareness in society, in general, and pregnant women, in particular, to reduce the content of fructose in their diet, through a preferential consumption of foods and beverages of natural origin, compared to processed foods and soft drinks that contain HFCS, in this way can prevent the negative effects of a diet rich in fructose and improve health, not only of the mother, but also of their children, "explains Carlos Bocos, lead author of this research

Diet and pregnancy

This study indicates once again the need to take care of the diet during pregnancy. What the mother eats affects her and the fetus. Therefore, from the Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital A series of tips are given for mothers to learn how to prepare their menu during pregnancy:

- During pregnancy, the diet may require supplements of minerals or vitamins, especially iron, calcium, vitamin D and folic acid, essential for women in pregnancy.

- The maximum requirements for iron occur in the second half of pregnancy, while the need for folates is higher in the preconception period and first weeks of pregnancy.

- In pregnant women and nursing mothers, a calcium intake of 1200 mg / day is recommended. Your intake can be covered with four daily servings of dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese or curd). This amount provides enough calcium, to achieve normal fetal development, without having to use the maternal bone reserves.

- Other sources of calcium are whole grains, legumes and green vegetables. Pregnant women should avoid the consumption of coffee, tobacco and alcohol, which interfere with calcium metabolism.
