How to talk about politics with the little ones in the house

Nowadays when turning on the television, it is not uncommon to see how the politics Is the order of the day. Elections, cases of corruption, and many other issues make the child know that something happens around him, even if he is not able to understand it. Should we explain it to him? Should we talk about these issues with the smallest of the house, or is it a mistake? The answer is none other than yes.

Children, when they see policy issues on television, know that something important happens around them, so it is better to explain it before they can form erroneous ideas. Of course, taking into account the age of them and knowing that they should never be transmitted ways to think, but to translate these messages that they hear and that sometimes can be complex even for the same adult.

Promote your critical spirit

How to talk about a topic that is sometimes complex even for adults? From the Nemours Foundation a series of tips are offered with which to treat these issues at home:

- Listen to your questions. Who has no doubts when they hear about a topic? The first step to talking about politics with a child is to listen to their concerns, to allow them the option to ask their parents about these issues.

- Explain it in a simple way. Politics, as has already been said, is complex for everyone. Therefore, we must adapt the explanation to the children's capacity for understanding. Using the imagination you can find examples so that the child can understand what his father is explaining to him.

- Encourage your critical spirit. As the child grows and understands the policy, he will be able to see an informative or read a newspaper and know what is being talked about. At this point, parents should encourage him to look for other information and to contrast the message he has heard so that his critical capacity grows.

- Never impose ideas. Children must be able to form their own political ideas and develop their own discourse. Parents can explain what they ask but never impose their way of seeing things, in this way, the spirit of debate will be encouraged, allowing them to learn how to defend it with arguments as they form their point of view.

- The house, an example of democracy. What better way to make understand what a democratic system is than through the same home? All have points of view that must be put in common, all ideas have a place if they are explained with criteria and never imposed. This is the value of democracy: that all are represented and have the opportunity to explain their ideas.
