What do our children need to study well?

Come now! How, in order to study, do they need to have an environment of general manager of a multinational company around them? To me all that "an auspicious environment, direct light, if possible natural, a quiet and quiet space, a table of at least 70 cm deep" sounds like a mix of catalog of furniture store and cheap magazine of self help Make no mistake: what our children need to study is to have the desire to study or, failing that, to feel the weight of the obligation to study. If they have any of these two things or both combined, it will not matter if they study in the best of the desks or in the pole of a henhouse. I have seen students take their doctorate in their long hours on public transport. A colleague of mine took the race while working as a security guard at night, from sentry box to sentry box with the book in his hand. And I imagine that throughout history there will be not a few geniuses who launched their brains in the light of a cold lamp of the chilblains. But what I'm talking about today is not so much physical space, which seems totally accessory, as the mental preparation. The first key in the study, as in everything else, is to make habit, because only habit makes virtue. To achieve this, there are no great secrets but the simple and constant reiteration of customs that end up anchoring in the mental time of our children that moment dedicated to tasks. What is that moment? It will depend on each house, but the rule is not to feel sorry for them. If we let ourselves be carried away by the "who rests a little bit and then gets home with the task", the most probable thing is that when the "after" arrives - always too late - we will be left with so little desire as little time ahead. So perhaps it is better to consider a "the sooner you take it off, the more time you have to play", which also offers a realistic and appetizing perspective that works like carrots. It is true that we subject children and adolescents to marathon days that sometimes even adults will not tolerate. It is true that this generation is so full of extracurricular activities that life does not give them more. But it is no less true that has not been heard so far in any news that any child has died for doing homework. So we can be calm. Regarding the second key that I give is an idea that breaks with the schemes of the furniture store of the beginning: How about if everyone studies with their things but all in the same space? And if they see us studying at that time too? What do we study? From how to be better parents to a review of the history for when they ask us. What if we can transform our kitchen, living room or living room into a real library? What if feeling that several people are trying at the same time, get the encouragement they need? We use this system and, although sometimes you hear too many "ssssshhhh" asking for silence, the result is very positive. The good light and all that is fine, but with habit and shared example are achieved, 100% sure, the desire that is needed.
