Congenital heart disease, monitor what happens to parents to predict what will happen to the child

Prevention is always better than cure. Although it is true that you can not put a plaster before the wound appears, you can always attend to a series of signs that make parents to prevent facing the future. It is the case of heart disease congenital, that when appearing in many parents, there is a high possibility that they reappear in the smallest of the house.

From the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona It offers a list of heart diseases that affect parents, should put them on alert because there is a high probability that these conditions are present in their children. A way to adapt life at home to these circumstances and prevent the risks related to these health problems.

Heart diseases that you should have an account

From this hospital institution, a series of congenital cardiopathies are offered that are at high risk of passing from generation to generation and that must be taken into account at the time of pregnancy:

- Cardiomyopathies. Diseases that affect the heart muscle,
myocardium). These include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, non-compacted cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and restrictive cardiomyopathy.

- Canalopathies. Diseases of the ion channels that affect the functioning of the heart and can produce lethal arrhythmias. Among them, the syndromes of long QT, short QT, Brugada and polymorphic catecholaminergic ventricular tachycardia.

- Aortopathies. Diseases of the aorta (the artery that carries oxygenated blood throughout the body) that produce its dilation and pose a risk of rupture of it. The best known of this group are the Marfan syndrome and the Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

Risk of congenital heart disease

Hospital Sant Joan de Déu warns of the possible risks of congenital heart disease:

- Greater possibility of sudden death, in many occasions without having produced any previous notice. Although in people older than 35 years the most frequent cause of sudden death is ischemic heart disease (as a result of atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries), in young people are familial cardiopathies.

- Possibility of more than one case, a congenital heart disease can affect several people of the same family (especially among siblings). Hence, the assessment of a case includes other tests on close relatives. From the identification of a person affected it is essential to study their relatives, make a genealogical tree and identify those antecedents with unexplained death, especially at an early age.

- Presentation is very heterogeneous. People who have affectation of the same gene, also show different mutations and heterogeneous manifestations. This fact means that, once the diagnosis of an affected person is made, its management does not depend so much on presenting the affected gene as on the manifestations it produces in the person.
