The integration of the student with Asperger in the classroom

Adapting to a new environment is always difficult. For any student, starting a new class and having to get to know the classmates can be hard work for any child. Even more if it encounters any barrier, as is the case of minors with Asperger, who present several symptoms similar to autistic spectrum disorders.

For this reason it is very important for parents, teachers and other students to help the student's integration with Asperger in the classroom. Process that can benefit from the advice that is offered from the University of Salamanca and that can help many children with asperger who face a real challenge each time they start a new course.

The student with asperger

What do you suppose a student has asperger? First of all we must know that this child has symptoms that will be maintained over time. There are therapies to minimize them, but there is no cure for them. Therefore, the assessment early it is crucial to initiate an early attention and an adequate treatment, fundamental to help the future students to develop their abilities and to carry out their best social adaptation potential.

Their social skills They can be summarized like this:

- Complication when starting any type of social communication.

- They present problems to establish and maintain reciprocal conversation. They can listen, but they do not know what to answer.

- Overlooking the personal space, so they can be very close to the other students making them feel uncomfortable

- Sometimes the student with asperger can avoid eye contact with their interlocutors, they present an attention is deficient.

- Tendency to express their thoughts frankly, without considering the impact on others.

The response of the center

The school can help the integration of the asperger with the adaptation of the same to the needs of the student, as well as the attention of the teachers. The school can favor the autonomy of these children with a sign system based on pictograms. In this way the common places will be easily identifiable thanks to these indicators that will have to be placed in the corresponding classroom door facilitating the orientation allowing the identification of the room.

The teacher can also help to favor the student's attention with asperger placing it near the blackboard and next to it so that you can follow the lesson. It must also ensure that elements that can distract students are not present in the classroom. At the same time, improvisations must be avoided, and when a change in routine happens, this alteration of one activity by another will have to be explained.

The teaching team can also collaborate in the integration through a structured learning environment:

- Clearly mark the duration of each activity, allowing the child to predict their usual routine.

- Explain the tasks in small manageable sections with a beginning and end making the exercises more operational.

- Provide structure in unstructured times.

- Use a clear, precise and concrete language. To encourage communication, use the child's name to get their attention first.

The work of parents

Parents can participate in the integration of the student of the asperger, whether they have children with this disorder or if their children are the companions of them. Other students can to collaborate to make this adaptation more bearable and the work of their parents is to teach them how to do it.

The student with asperger has a high risk of abuse between equals or rejection by their peers. Parents should help to avoid this situation by explaining to their children the characteristics of these children, letting them know that they can be as good friends as anyone else. They can also talk with other parents to integrate these children into extracurricular activities such as birthdays, field trips or other practices.

In the case of the parents of the student with asperger, their work can help to start singing before working for the integration. They are the first to detect these symptoms, so that thanks to this, an early diagnosis can be made and begin to search for and apply effective therapeutic options.

Parents of these students become the main source of information about their child and can offer valuable guidance to teachers and parents of other students about their characteristics, their behavior and their daily activities. For this reason too it is recommended to have a meeting with the tutor of the children with asperger to plan a good strategy for the same.
