The influence of a violent environment on the child's academic performance

Many aspects influence a child's education. In this work, researchers have focused on assessing the influence of an environment marked by violence in the smallest. An environment marked by these characteristics makes children have bad grades when living in a climate of stress that affects their quality of sleep, among other aspects.


Stress and violence

Researchers from this university initially linked stress and an environment violent. Those children who develop in this environment, either because of the activities they perform or because of the content they watch on television, show higher levels of stress. Can this translate into greater difficulty to rest and present an adequate level of sleep for the school day?

To verify this, the researchers gathered 82 students from 11 to 18 years of age to check the influence of the environment on their academic level. Those students who lived in areas where there was a higher level of violence, had rest levels below the average. That ultimately resulted in lower academic performance.


An interesting perspective since this coexistence With violence it can be extrapolated to other points. For example, the content they see on television or the behavior their parents show at home in the form of discussions. "Both sleep and cortisol are connected to the ability to learn and perform academic tasks, and our study identifies a path through which violence could affect academic performance," says Jenni Heissel, lead author.
