Selfies, a meaning beyond photography

The new technologies have brought a host of new terms to name issues that did not exist before. A good example is'selfie', a word that refers to the photographs taken by people taking advantage of the front cameras of their smartphones. A self-portrait that usually monopolizes much of the content in social networks of the youngest.

However, in some cases, 'selfie'is much more than a definition of photography. This is indicated by a study carried out by the University of Birminghan He points out that these images are related to an egocentric personality that demands constant recognition by society. In other cases it is also related to a low self-esteem that seeks the approval of other people by publishing this content on social networks.

The sense of intimacy

Taking a selfie and posting it on social networks means telling the world what you are doing at a given moment. In some cases, this becomes an obsession for many young people who think it necessary to be sharing These images on these platforms to maintain contact with other people. A dependence on this digital socialization that actually makes the end of each activity is to boast of it and not enjoy it.

The researchers congregated 500 users of social networks to ask them what kind of content they upload to this platform. At the same time they had to answer a personality test to check the characteristics of these people in this field. Most of those who published these selfies presented features of narcissistic people and a poor sense of intimacy.

These people also showed less skills to relate in person, on the contrary they practically lived in a virtual environment where they revealed many details of their day to day. In addition, their narcissistic traits they also blocked their chances of making friends with other people. As highlighted by the addiction center Rosello, these individuals present the following disadvantages:

- He does not listen, he only hears to see how he stands out. While ignoring the other's comment.

- He is usually selfish, being interested in his own good. If it is generous, it is usually for your own interests.

- The rules do not apply to your person

- Intolerance to criticism. Any small negative criticism makes him angry.

- They do not accept responsibilities.

Postureure addiction

The study 'Desco-net-ta' also brings to the table the effects that social networks are causing on young people and the addiction that many present for showing their lives on these platforms. The 30 per cent of the respondents in this work states that they need to use their mobile phones to keep their relatives informed. A situation that prevents disconnection even during the summer as people are more attentive to take a picture than to enjoy free time.

To avoid this dependency, parents can help disconnect from new technologies:

- Propose activities that make you forget the need to connect to social networks.

- Establish a schedule of use outside of which these technologies can not be used.

- Scold when you see that these devices are being misused.

- Promote the enjoyment of situations and not the constant taking of photographs.

- Preaching by example and not taking advantage of any family activity to take a selfie that then share on social networks.

- Remember the importance of privacy and the dangers of losing it.
