Firecrackers, this affects visual health
- 7 eye care essential in summer
For many people, leisure and certain events mean throwing firecrackers and fireworks. The pyrotechnics is an activity that can liven up an evening but if you are not careful, it can cause some other health problem such as burns or in extreme cases, the dismemberment of a finger.
Firecrackers are also detrimental to visual health, as shown in the publication of New England Journal of Medicine. A text that explains the danger that pyrotechnics has for the eyes, in some cases cause blindness and deteriorate the eyeball, causing permanent damage.
Remains in the eyes
The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine is based on the case of a patient from India, who suffered damage to his eyes after a firecracker exploded too close to his face. One of his eyeballs was broken making it impossible to return his sight in this area, the other could be saved after a long treatment. This resulted in a considerable reduction in their visual capacity.
The damages suffered by this patient were due to the firecrackers challenges that reached their eyeballs. The presence of fragments in the cornea made it more difficult to remove it since the extraction surgery could cause serious vision problems in this person. After three months of treatment, the specialists were able to return a large part of their capacity, although the other eye was unrecoverable.
Despite this action by the specialists, the eye that was saved ended up developing bulbar. A disease that greatly reduces the sense of sight, which meant that this patient was practically blind because of this firecracker. A case that demonstrates the security that must be in the pyrotechnics, an activity that should not be performed by children given the risks involved.
Prevent accidents
Prevention is the best treatment. Avoiding the accident before it occurs makes the risk practically nil. Here are some tips when it comes to making children safer:
- The firecrackers for professionals. The law of pyrotechnics must be respected and not use articles of professionals at the amateur level. In the case that allowed products are purchased, they must be used by adults and never by minors, who must observe the show from a safe distance.
- Explain to the child from a young age that fire is dangerous and clearly show you what elements you should stay away from. We can not presume that you know the risks you have around you.
- Install a smoke detector. Having a smoke detector will warn of the presence of fire in the home allowing you to act quickly in case the child is in another room.
- Children should be as far as possible from sources of fire such as matches, lighters and kitchen lighters. Their use should be avoided in the presence of minors since they can understand that it is a toy and not a dangerous product.
