Parks with sand, a focus of infections for the little ones

The fun should never forget about safety. Having fun is something that all children like, but you have to take into account the risks that these activities can entail. Dangers that not only have to do with the aggressiveness that is used or with the behavior of the little ones. The environment also plays a very important role in ensuring the integrity of minors.

During the time they spend in the park, many elements can influence their safety. As for example the sand present in many of these areas and in which children play often. An environment that according to a new study carried out by the Complutense University of Madrid demonstrates that these environments are a place with a large presence of germs that can end up causing infections in the smallest.

Coexistence with pathogens

In this study, the team of Dr. José Blanco analyzed a total of 20 sand boxes for children distributed throughout the city of Madrid and its surroundings. The goal was to find the bacteria Clostridium difficile in these environments. The tests that were found revealed that more than half of the environments investigated contained several strains of this germ.

Some of the bacteria strains found showed an increase in the production of toxins, and in other cases they were resistant to antibiotics. Dr. Blanco explains that the effects of this bacteria on the body are several and can range from a simple diarrhea, to an inflammation of colon very dangerous for the health of the little one. In addition, Clostridium Difficile is very difficult to treat.

"Clostridium difficile can be difficult to treat, because the bacteria create an environment in the intestines that facilitates its growth," said the doctor. William Muinos, pediatric gastroenterologist at the Nicklaus Pediatric Hospital, who has dedicated part of his work to analyzing the sandboxes where children play.

For his part, Dr. Blanco reassures families and states that these results should not alarm anyone, regardless of the game in these environments. "There are many bacteria pathogenic around us. We have to live with them, and we learn to live with them (...) This study demonstrates the presence of these bacteria in the environment, and the need for more studies to clarify their presence in our communities ", concludes the researcher.

Other bacteria

Clostridium difficile is not the only bacterium found in sand parks by researchers. Other studies such as those made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention United States. Other dangers, such as parasites Toxoplasma Gondii appear in these environments. The symptoms in these cases are identical to those of a flu and we must take special care for the presence of eggs of these beings.

There are other risks as well earthworms like the pinworms and nematodes, present in the sand parks. These parasites cause an average of 70 cases of blindness per year in the United States, according to the CDC, most of them are children. But this does not mean that children stop playing in these areas.

The specialists recommend more citizenship in these cases and take care of aspects such as dogs do not make depositions in these places or throw litter in these environments. It is also advised to maintain a usual hygiene and change the sand periodically, as well as analyze these areas in search of these dangers for the health of the little ones.
