Young Spaniards, more realistic and optimistic about their future work

The job it is one of the themes that most take sleep away from young people. The current context of society means that many can not access the job they want or that they can not find a way to register in the labor market. But it seems that these generations do not lose hope and believe that the situation will improve in the near future.

According to the data of Barometer 2017 Queen Sofia Center on Adolescence and Youth, optimism among young people has grown. Half of them believe that their situation will improve in less than a year, time in which they will end up finding a position of work. Of course, many of these people are still financially dependent on their families waiting to start in the labor market and start earning money.


Optimism despite your situation

The numbers in this study remind us that according to the figures from the Active Population Survey, EPA, 41.6% of young people up to 25 years old are still unemployed. However, this situation does not seem to make them lose optimism. The Barometer 2017 Reina Sofía Center on Adolescence and Youth indicate that 50% of the members of these generations believe that their situation will improve within a year, time in which they will end up finding a position of work.

Of course, this optimism is added a large dose of realism as indicated by the data in this study. The 68% he believes that he is likely to find work, but of anything, not only that for which he was formed. On the other hand, 68.2% believe that it is quite probable to have to continue preparing and studying in order to enroll in the labor market. In contrast, 13.7% said that they do not value this possibility for economic reasons.


On his vision of economic future, this has also been interested
work. 61% believe that they will have to continue depending on their family in this regard. On the other hand, there are also young people who are realistic of the sacrifices to make to get to the end of the month, almost half of them, 46.7%, think they will have to cut their spending on hobbies and free time not to spend trouble. In this sense, 15.3% think that they will even have to cut the basic food item.

Move to work

The Barometer 2017 Reina Sofía Center on Adolescence and Youth also shows how young people know that the territorial mobility It is a very real option to find work in the future. 39% consider that they have a high possibility of having to go abroad to integrate into the labor market, at least in the near future. Although only 22% resorted to this formula after turning 16 years old. Within this percentage, 38% went to the United Kingdom and 12% opted for job interviews in Ireland.


Mobility within the national territory is also an option for young Spaniards. In this sense, Madrid is the Autonomous Community that attracts more young people for work reasons, with 28.3% of people who have come to it pursuing a better future. In second place appears followed Andalusia, with 11%, and Catalonia, 8%.

The youth economy

Regarding the origin of money managed by young people, the main sources of income are the work itself or family contributions, at least in a third of the people that make up these generations. Another 15% sustains their economy with sporadic jobs and 9% scholarships or study grants.

Regular work is more common among young people who have university studies and who live alone or as a couple from 20 years old. Lack of own income appears more frequently among those of minor age, among women and those who live with their family of origin.

And what do young people spend their money? The biggest monthly item for these generations is food, at least for 48%. In second position appears the maintenance of a vehicle, 28%, and eating out of home (28%). Exits, leisure, culture, personal hygiene and clothing are the main source of spending for 23% of young people. The acquisition of new technologies and travel is the most important thing for 11% of the participants.
