April 23, why are we celebrating World Book Day on this date?

The answer is in the history. April 23 is a very symbolic date for the history of the book since it is a very special day in the life of numerous writers. The most famous, Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. However, there are many other authors who are also closely related to this calendar day.


The first Book Day in 1926

In Spain the first day of the book was celebrated in 1926. The first to inaugurate this tradition was Vicente Clavel Andrés, Valencian writer who in 1923 made a proposal before the Official Chamber of the Book of Barcelona to celebrate an event that highlights the importance of these copies. It was necessary to wait 3 years until King Alfonso XIII approved this suggestion. Curiously, this celebration was not an April 23rd.

The first Book Day in Spain took place on October 7, 1926. It was not until 1930 when the authorities decided to transfer this event to April 23, date that coincided with the feast of St. George, patron of Catalonia. The choice of this calendar day is related to the history of literature. As it has been said, Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare died on this day back in 1616, two of the greatest authors the world has seen.


But many other authors are related to April 23. Inca Garcilaso de la Vega also died on this date as well as Cervantes and Shakespeare.
