More than half of teachers would bet to increase reading time

Read It is one of the most important things a child should learn, along with writing. Knowing how to interpret the symbols on a paper and translate them to learn this knowledge is very important. In the process of internalization of this skill, the school and the teachers play a very important role.

But is enough time in school devoted to reading? According to the majority of teachers in Spain, they do not understand that LOMCE should increase the hours allocated to these activities within the educational centers. This is highlighted by the CICLIP Barometer prepared by the Spanish Association of Reading Comprehension.

Training demand

According to the data of this study, the 68% Teachers confess to devote between one and 4 hours a week to reading. Although it stands out even more than 42% of education professionals confess not to have enough training to teach reading comprehension within their classrooms and 46% reveal that they would not be able to detect a disorder that hinders this ability.

Therefore, it is not surprising that almost 80% of teachers claim more training in this area to be able to detect possible problems that hinder the reading comprehension of the smallest. The Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia are the autonomous communities where teaching professionals consider themselves less prepared.

On the contrary, La Rioja, Castilla y León, Comunidad Valenciana and Cataluña are communities where teachers recognize themselves as better prepared to teach reading comprehension within the classroom. Regarding the hours devoted to these affairs, the territories that spend less time on this are: Castilla-La Mancha, with 1.8 hours, Baleares, 1.8, and Extremadura with 1.9.

Encourage reading at home

It is true that teachers have great responsibility when it comes to instilling reading in children. However, there is no denying that at home you can do much to make children feel attracted to these fantasy worlds full of pages with many adventures and knowledge:

1. Freedom of choice. The child has a critical capacity and should be left to choose the books he wants to read. Imposing is a bad way to encourage reading. It is advisable that parents propose to their children books that feed their curiosity, but at no time can they be forbidden or forced to read one book or another.

2. Do not impose reading. In this aspect you have to be assertive and play with the reward to encourage reading. Forcing the child to read a certain time each day will only encourage the child to abhor reading and not contemplate it as a hobby or hobby.

3. Understanding reading as a game. A great difficulty when it comes to encouraging reading has been that books have always been related to the academic world. Teaching the friendly and playful face of the books and letting the child access the world of reading on their own is the best way to promote their concern for it. Reading should be a pleasant act.

4. Read in creative spaces. It is advisable to set aside the room desk and look for places that feed the imagination. Libraries are an ideal place to read, study, but we can not forget that parks and other open spaces are also perfect to enjoy a book, always better in the company of parents.

5. Establish a daily routine. Find a space and a daily time for the child to dedicate to reading, such as before going to sleep or right after the snack. Creating a habit and making the child link that time to enjoyment is the best way to enhance reading.

6. Open the doors to digital reading. Reading and the digital world are becoming more and more linked, with the arrival of tablets and mobile phones the interactive books in which the child builds his own story. We must try to adapt to new technologies and consider that paper and electronic ink are able to coexist perfectly.

7. Encourage enjoyment. Reading can be seen as a way to enjoy and the widespread idea that reading is a form of solitary leisure has to be banished. Making field trips to read, go to the park or take advantage of Sundays in the morning to read all together on the sofa are small gestures that both large and small will enjoy and that will help us encourage reading at home.

8. Be interested in reading. The best way to get involved in the reading of our children is to be proactively interested in their favorite titles, characters and genres. Interested in their readings, we encourage our son to continue reading and to feel appreciated.

9. Boost your imagination encouraging him to write his own stories. With reading the imagination is triggered and the best way to give vent to this creativity is to promote the child feels writing. In addition, with this type of activities, children improve other aspects such as creativity, grammar and spelling, making their learning something didactic and interactive.

10. Lead by example. The example is the best way to promote the reading of the little ones. The children look for examples to look for and the first models to follow are at home, not only in the parents, but also in the other members of the family.
