Kiva, the program against Finnish harassment that arrives in Spain

The fight against bullying It is one of the issues that most concern today. Finding a way to stop this problem is a mission that government agencies have taken very seriously and for that purpose they resort to plans that have been successful in other countries. This is the case of Kiva, the anti-bullying program that was successfully carried out in Finland.

Now in Spain, the intention is to apply Kiva to achieve the same objectives as in the Nordic country. A program that tries to encourage different values among children such as empathy among peers and make schoolchildren have a constructive attitude towards a better environment of coexistence.

Kiva, characteristics of the anti-bullying program

Developed by the University of Turku, Kiva is a program designed against bullying that involves influencing group norms and creating an environment that prevents bullying among students. The mission is to act before it occurs and encourage an attitude of rejection of bullying so that at no time the children think about doing this act.

Kiva also foresees specific actions for when cases of harassment occur inside the classrooms. These mechanisms focus on both the victims and the executioners, to both support those who have suffered this episode and to increase the feeling of empathy that those who perform these practices have.

At the same time, Kiva also has prepared mechanisms with which to supervise the situation of the school and those changes that are taking place within its walls. Tools with which the school can review comments each year and monitor if these measures are taking effect.

The success of this plan has been seen in Finland and not only Spain has copied these measures, but also countries such as Estonia, Italy and some areas of the United Kingdom such as Wales have also implemented it and have succeeded in this regard.

Other measures against bullying

Not only Kiva is the way to end school bullying inside the classrooms. Other mechanisms are also good in this regard. Tools like the following:

- Promote skills training and strategies in families to have good levels of education.

- Educate in sensitivity, make the children understand the right and respect for the victim and put themselves in their place to avoid situations of violence and isolation of certain minors.

- Create a collaborative model of solving problems between family and school as a way to address the problems of cyberbullying.

- Do not respond to provocation: in a situation of cyberbullying, it is essential not to respond to the provocations and make it clear that the actions of the harasser can be constitutive of crime and that action will be taken accordingly.

- Educate in the technical functioning of the Internet: you have to make them aware of the risks (viruses, spam, identity theft, etc.) and the tools that need to be installed on the computers (antivirus, firewalls, etc.).

- Limit the hours of use to avoid any kind of dependence on social networks and establish a common place to locate the computer.

- Establish an age criterion, both for the use of technology and for access to content.

- Instill the concept of crime: teaching them that the behaviors they carry out in the use of new technologies and the Internet can also have consequences in the family environment (punishments), in the school setting (sanctions) or, even in more serious cases, including criminal (crimes) ).
