This is the first guide for parents of bad-tempered teenagers

If your child is in full "turkey age", and you notice that he is almost always in a bad mood ... there are things you can do. Dr. Jose Luis Carrasco, Professor of Psychiatry and director of the Unit of Personality and Behavior of the Ruber Juan Bravo Hospital Complex, has launched the first Guide for parents of bad-tempered teenagers in order to guide the family interaction and rule out possible future personality building problems for adolescents.

Why are teens often in a bad mood?

The whys of the bad mood in adolescents can be infinite and the answers, in some cases, require the intervention of professionals. Part of the origin of the bad mood lies in the hormonal explosion and also in the large number of vital changes that occur during adolescence. Hormones (estrogen and progesterone, in girls, and testosterone, in boys) are responsible for physical and sexual changes in this stage of life, but also the environment and social relationships change. Each one has a different rhythm of growth and evolution. For this reason, the withdrawal from childhood friends and, as a consequence, the search and approach to other friendships that are situated in a more or less similar level of maturation.

All these changes produce emotional instability and feelings of vulnerability in adolescents. They do not understand what is happening to them. That is why, when adults ask them what is wrong, they respond in a hostile manner.

The psychiatrist José Luis Carrasco clarifies that "it is usually complex to deal with adolescents, but sometimes life with them transcends the complexity to become a day to day too difficult. they lose control of their lives in this stage, they are aggressive, in a bad mood most of the time and it gives the sensation that we do what we do not get right in our reactions, since everything bothers them".

Useful guide for parents of teenagers

To guide parents on the difficult path of educating a teenage son and deal with their mood swings without losing their nerve, Dr. Carrasco has created this guide in collaboration with Dr. Marina Díaz Marsa, a specialist in eating disorders and the psychologist Nerea Palomares.

The objective is to guide parents in the knowledge of the mood changes of their children in adolescence, analyzing first, the causes that originate them, and secondly how personality, character and temperament work at this age. Thanks to these explanations, parents can better understand "why everything bothers them" or "they are aggressive".

In addition to suggesting solutions for the management of the 'bad mood' of adolescents as not show superiority, respect distance, participate with more ideas and less advice, do not remind them of their difficulties ..., offers clues to know when it is necessary to consult a specialist. In this last case, we must be alert to their signals: problems of self-esteem, violence, not respecting authority, we do not know what to do, behaviors that involve suicidal thoughts ... these are just some of the signs that can alert us that the problem It can not be solved only at home.
