Aspirin helps prevent premature births in risky pregnancies
Pregnancy is a process as beautiful as it is complicated. There are many variables that can cause a mother to have complications such as giving birth prematurely to her baby, leading to unemployment premature. But luckily different investigations focus on preventing these problems and making gestation a safer process.
As for example the investigation carried out by the Amsterdam Academic Medical Center, The Netherlands, which has tried to analyze how births can be prevented premature in risky pregnancies. The answer was found in aspirin, a medication that in low doses has benefits for these mothers.
Anticoagulants help
These researchers started from the basis that aspirin could contribute to improve the level of anticoagulants in women with risk pregnancy. In this way, it would be possible to reduce preeclampsia, which causes spontaneous preterm birth, one of the main concerns in today's gynecologists.
For this they focused on the results of more than 27,000 women who had participated in 17 randomized trials: in 15 of them the intake of a low dose of aspirin was compared with that of a placebo, or no treatment. In the other two smaller jobs, some participants did receive aspirin with dipyridamole or dipyridamole alone.
These researchers analyzed to what extent aspirin had contributed to prevent spontaneous preterm birth before weeks 37, 34 and 38 of pregnancy. Those women who had taken aspirin had better levels of anticoagulants so they had a lower chance of giving birth to their children ahead of time.
Interesting data
Those responsible for this study stated that these data will be from much useful when developing techniques for the prevention of preterm birth in high-risk pregnancies. The results show that vascular abnormalities are a risk factor for the mother to deliver her child prematurely. In this way, gynecologists could initiate effective treatments for pregnant women if they detect any of these problems.
"Anticoagulants reduce the risk of developing placental vascular abnormalities," explained the doctor. Martijn Oudijk, lead author of this study that affirms that any therapy that helps prevent premature birth, however small, is well received in the world of gynecology. Therefore, his team will continue to investigate the benefits of aspirin in risk pregnancies.
