Bullying is related to the drop in academic performance
The school can be transformed into a real hell for many children. Within their walls they must face a danger as great as it is silent: the bullying. Many children and adolescents have to endure daily humiliating treatment within the classroom, a situation that can have a very negative impact on their lives, both at the psychological and academic levels.
This is indicated by a new study conducted by the Arizona State University, United States, where it has been proven how the bullying It has a very close relationship with the drop in academic performance of its victims.
I hate school and institute
To analyze the influence of bullying on the academic performance of schoolchildren, the researchers carried out an exhaustive follow-up of hundreds of children from the preschool stages of their education to high school. Along the way, they analyzed the attitudes of these students and whether they experienced any change when they became victims of bullying.
The first surprise that the responsible ones took is that the bullying happened with more aggressiveness in the primary stage of Education. While it was previously thought that harassment occurred more frequently and virulence in the institutes, researchers found that they were at the earliest ages when children were most cruel in this regard. Do not allow to play in the group of friends, funny nicknames to certain students, these activities that are often seen as "children's things" represented an example of bullying.
As these children grew, the cases of bullying were reduced. However in high school approximately one 24% of the students investigated was a chronic victim of this intimidation throughout the courses. That is to say, the one who suffers harassment at an early age, continues to suffer throughout his academic life, which ends up creating in him a hatred towards the center where he suffers and want to avoid going to it as much as possible .
Long-term effects
As indicated by those responsible for this study, novelty of this study is that he has been able to verify the effects of bullying in the long term. While until now only the immediate consequences of bullying have been monitored, the trajectories a student can follow if he suffers from this situation in the classrooms have now been demonstrated.
In this way it was found that those students who suffered from chronic school bullying registered worse academic performance than those who solved their problem on time. The motives? A rejection of school and to everything that is related to her, that is, the forgetting of her commitment to the educational center and the confinement in her world. This factor also joins the emotional situation in which these students are immersed and that deprives them of all motivation to resume the course of their lives.
