The educational level, key to ascend in society

The education it is a key element to facilitate social ascent. This is shown by a study prepared by the Observatory of La Caixa that indicates that the educational level reached by each person will be essential when determining the Social Mobility to which a person can aspire. And it can be in both directions. It can facilitate both a rise among the different strata of the population, as well as a decrease.

University education, the best promotion

One of the conclusions reached is that those who have a university degree have 14% chance to access the upper classes, professionals and managers, who have not completed Secondary Education.

Higher education can also help improve the situation in which you were born. Specifically, who come from middle families and have a university degree they have up to a three percent chance of accessing a high social status.

Social status: the origin also helps

The observatory of La Caixa also asks how the educational level can influence when it comes to maintaining a social status. And it shows that the origin also contributes. In those cases where the university student was born in a well-to-do family context and has parents with professional and managerial occupations, he is twice as likely not to see his position in the social pyramid altered.

This relationship also applies to those cases where a person born in a family of lower level. If the person finishes only the Secondary Education, it has up to 52% of the probability of remaining motionless in this ladder.

The educational level and the social pyramid

If a high level of education increases the chances of climbing the social pyramid, a low one can cause a decrease. At least this is what the observatory of La Caixa says, indicating that there is an 11% chance of lower level with a higher degree. This percentage increases as education decreases is 49% in those who have Secondary Education and 66% if they have a lower educational level.

In the case of high levels there is a 75% chance that someone lacking Secondary Education reduces their status. The probability that someone with a university degree will fall low will be 8%.
