Long naps increase the risk of type 2 diabetes

Although a brief time of nap after eating can be beneficial, rest more than the bill increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is indicated by a study from the University of Tokyo with Dr. Yamada Tomahide at the helm.

This work has compared those cases in which he did not fall asleep nap and those in which it exceeded the time to check which of them had more risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Common patterns

Tomahide wanted to check his theory analyzing the data of 300,000 patients participants in later studies. After analyzing these cases, he discovered that naps of one hour or more were related to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. breaks less than 60 minutes they did not influence the development of this disease.

In particular Tomahide speaks of an increased risk of a 45% in those cases where the siesta exceeded the hour of duration. However, the researcher concludes that although this is a promising start. According to the Japanese, there is still much work to be done to show that there is indeed a cause and effect relationship between long naps and the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Other researchers of diabetes have seen interesting the theory presented by Tomahide. This is the case of Dr. Joel Zonszein, director of the Clinical Center of Diabetes Montefiore Medical Center, who goes beyond the duration of the nap. This professional expresses that type 2 diabetes is a very complex process which is influenced by several environmental factors.

According to Zonszein naps can be a reflection of a lifestyle that causes type 2 diabetes combine several elements. This researcher expresses that perhaps the longest naps are actually short periods of sleep and more common in individuals who work long hours. This causes these people to be stressed all day, and have to resort to fast food.

In Zonstein's opinion, long naps are only a marker of a lifestyle that influences the risk of type 2 diabetes. It should be remembered that this disease is usually related to a bad lifestyle with a large presence of sedentary lifestyle and bad nutrition.

Pattern that fits with the type of person that according to this researcher abuses these rest periods.

Short naps pose less stress

Zonstein also presents his theory on why short naps do not influence the development of type 2 diabetes. For this researcher, these short periods of rest in the afternoons are related to a lifestyle with less stress and more free time that allows them to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Another diabetes researcher, Dr. Gerald Bernstein, argues that there is indeed a relationship between long naps and increase in sugar in blood. Although this does not mean that periods of long rest in the afternoon trigger this disease. Of course, Berstein recommends that in case a person decides to nap, better that this be short.
