Blows on the teeth, how to react?

The desire to discover new things and play of children never end, any occasion is good to get up and run with your friends to enjoy and have fun. Sometimes, this entertainment unfortunately ends in crying for the little ones as they occasionally suffer small accidents, one of the most frequent and that most scare us are the bruises on the denture that can cause breakage of a tooth.

In what ages are the blows in the teeth more frequent?

As the Association of Pediatrics, AEP says, there are two age groups in which children are more likely to suffer strokes on their teeth.

- Children from 0 to 1 year old. The first one is composed by children in their first year of life, at which time they learn to crawl and walk. In this age they discover movement and do everything possible to enjoy it always, sometimes they cause falls that do not have a reflection that leads them to put their hands on the ground. Therefore, the blow to the teeth, particularly the incisors, is unavoidable in most cases.

- Children between 6 and 9 years old. At this age, when the youngest children play more games and sports, the practice of these activities has less parental supervision. To this is added that the milk teeth are about to fall so if a blow occurs in this area some of these pieces eventually fall. This does not mean that teeth other than milk are not at risk from a blow.

How to react to a blow to the teeth?

The first thing to keep in mind if the child hits his teeth is that he is going to be very nervous. It will be important to be calm to try to reduce the anxiety of the children. If the situation is calmed down, we will be able to evaluate in a better way what could have happened after the coup and to what extent this impact has been serious.

The AEP states that there may be two logical situations after the child suffers a blow to his teeth:

- That after the impact keep all the teeth

- That he lost a tooth after the blow.

Each of these contexts has its own ways of reacting. In the case that the lack of a tooth is not appreciated, what must be checked is that no teeth move or some type of bleeding has occurred. It will also be necessary to see if the child bites as before, in the event that this is not the case, it is important to see a dentist for tests to determine if there is any injury to the jaw.

Another possibility after the blow is that there is not a fall of the tooth but a fragment of it. Depending on the size of this piece will have to act in one way or another. If the piece is small, a visit to the dentist will suffice for it to polish the surface from which it has come off. If it is a larger fragment, it must be looked for quickly to keep it hydrated since this way the dentist will be able to join it again to the tooth with special adhesives.

If what has been detached in a total piece of the tooth, as with large fragments should be found and manipulated as little as possible, save it in milk or saline. After this, the dentist must be urgently reimplanted as quickly as possible. It must be remembered that this is only recommended in the case that the detached tooth is not of milk since there are risks of permanent injuries in the jaw.
