Gestational diabetes increases the risk of visual problems in the baby by 35%

Gestational diabetes is a pathology that can affect up to 14 percent of pregnant women between 30-35 years. New data reveal that gestational diabetes, increases the risk of the baby suffering from myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism by 35 percent.

According to Dr. Amina el Rubaidi, head of the ophthalmology service and expert in pediatric ophthalmology at the Nisa Pardo Hospital in Aravaca, "gestational diabetes is diagnosed frequently and it is essential to be aware that if we have gestational diabetes, the risk increases. 35 percent of our baby suffering from myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. "

Relationship between gestational diabetes and maternal age

The delay in the date when women begin their first pregnancy has numerous risks for the health of both the pregnant mother and the developing baby. As revealed by the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics, INE, the current average age of a new mother is at 32 years old and 1 in 5 women decide to become a mother after 35 years of age. In this situation, it can mean an increase in health complications during pregnancy and negatively affect the development of the fetus.

Gestational diabetes is one of the most frequent pathologies related to the mother's age and is more likely to appear when the pregnant woman is in her thirties. Its incidence can reach up to 14 percent of women in a state of good hope.

Glucose and carbohydrates: diet to control gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes only develops during pregnancy, is diagnosed when blood sugar levels are very high and affects a greater percentage of Latina women.

Due to hormonal changes, the pancreas is forced to create more insulin during pregnancy. However, some women can not, and therefore their blood sugar levels rise. That is when gestational diabetes or pregnancy diabetes appears. In most cases, this type of diabetes disappears when the baby is born.

Other factors that influence gestational diabetes are carbohydrate intolerance, family history of diabetes, personal history in previous pregnancies and belonging to ethnic groups with high prevalence of this disease, such as Latin American, Native American, Asian or African -American people.

Gestational diabetes is more common in the Mediterranean area than in northern Europe or North America. Fernandez Moya affirms that "we move in numbers that double globally those of the Anglo-Saxons". According to the data collected by the Spanish Group of Diabetes and Pregnancy, about half of the Spanish population has one or more risk factors for this disease.

For his part, Dr. José María Fernández Moya, coordinator of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of the hospital, notes that dietary habits, directly associated with the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, are essential when diagnosing gestational diabetes.
