Holy Week: 10 historic destinations to visit as a family

The Easter and with it the vacations of the smallest of the house. An occasion that we can take travel with our children to the different points of the national geography in which in addition to enjoying a relaxing time, we will live with our children the history of Spain while we walk through its streets.

And it is that Spain offers a wide catalog of destinations to visit in Holy Week, where the history of our country has been imprinted in a very well preserved heritage.

1. Port of Palos (Huelva)


One of the most important historical events not only of Spain, but of the whole world is the discovery of America. This event has an interpretation center in the Huelva town of Palos de la Frontera, place where Christopher Columbus left and where today you can visit the wharf of the caravels. This place houses a reproduction of the ships in which Columbus made this trip: the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María. In addition, in this same complex the children will find a reproduction of a Spanish city of the fifteenth century as well as San Salvador, the first island where Columbus landed.

2. Granada


The Andalusian city is one of the points of Spain that has more history in its streets. And here is the Alhambra, the last of the Muslim kingdoms to be reconquered and which today remains in almost perfect conditions. In addition, in the cathedral of Granada is the tomb of the Catholic Kings, one of the most important figures in national history and who lie with his daughter Juana and her husband, Felipe the "Beautiful."

3. Córdoba

Known for being the meeting point of the three cultures: Muslim, Jewish and Christian. Proof of this is its Mosque-Cathedral, where you can see how both religions coexist in one of the most curious buildings in Spain. Córdoba also houses the temple of Claudio Marcelo, whose columns still look imposingly in the old town and which show the importance that the Andalusian city had during the Roman era in our country.


4. Ávila

Located in Castilla y León, Ávila has a perfectly preserved historical center. It highlights especially the walls that cover the old part of the city and that give the appearance of being entering a medieval city when crossing them. Also in this Castilian town is the Museum of Saint Teresa of Jesus, located in the convent that bears his name and was built in the house where he was born. Ávila also has traces of contemporary history since in the cathedral of this city lies next to his wife Adolfo Suárez, president of the Spanish Transition.

5. Burgos

This Castilian-Leonian city is the place where the mortal remains of what may be the greatest hero in the Spanish imaginary rest: the Cid Campeador, who along with his wife lies on the cruise of the Burgos cathedral. In addition, in this town is the Museum of Human Evolution where you can find the fossil remains of our most distant ancestors, also from this complex it is possible to sign up for a guided tour of the Atapuerca deposit, one of the most important in the world and that has brought a new vision to our "family tree".

6. Segovia

Popularly known for its famous aqueduct, one of the pieces of Roman architecture best preserved to date and that imposingly means the entrance to the old town of this city. In Segovia we will also find the quarterdeck, building with fairytale castle aspect and was the fortress of the kings of Castile. In this Castilian city, we can also visit the Church of San Miguel, place where Queen Isabella was proclaimed Catholic.

7. San Lorenzo del Escorial (Madrid)

This town in Madrid is home to one of the most interesting buildings in the country: the Monastery of the Escorial. This impressive construction was designated by Felipe II who devised in this complex as a place that fulfilled several functions, from royal palace to pantheon. This building is also the pantheon of Spanish monarchs and here lie all the kings of our country from Carlos I, with the provisos of Fernando VI, José I and Amadeo I.

8. Covadonga (Asturias)

In this small Asturian town there was the battle that started the Reconquista in Spain in 722, when the forces of Don Pelayo defeated the Saracen troops thanks to their strategic placement in the narrow Cangas Valley. In the cave that was taken during this battle lie the remains of Don Pelayo and Alfonso I El Católico. In addition, the natural environment of this area invites us to perform various activities in nature.

9. Merida

The capital of Extremadura has a rich range of Roman remains that show the importance of Merida during this time. The most important monument is the Roman theater dating from the sixteenth and fifteenth centuries BC and with capacity for 6,000 spectators. To this day, works are still being performed in this space, taking advantage of its excellent condition. In this Extremadura town is also the Aqueduct of the Miracles of which are preserved at least more than 800 meters with a height of 27 meters.

10. Toledo

Characterized by its imposing Alcazar Located on the highest hill in the city. This building was commissioned by Charles I to house a residence for the monarchs, but never fulfilled this function of residence for kings, but nevertheless widowed queens as Mariana of Austria or Joan of Neoburg were established here after retiring from court. Also, in Toledo we can visit the Cristo de la Luz mosque, the best preserved of the 10 that were in this city, after the Reconquest was ceded to the order of San Juan, who established a hermitage there.
