Against domestic violence, paint the world of orange

Violence against women is unacceptable, it can be avoided and, above all, it can be prevented. That is what at least the executive director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka believes. And, like her, hundreds of people are willing, from tomorrow and for 16 days, to "paint the world of orange" in line with the UNiTE campaign to eliminate violence against women and girls.

Every 25th of November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and if last year we were invited to dye our neighborhood in this color, in 2015 we can go a step further, because, in the words of Ngcuka, "there is evidence about the type of actions that can stop the violence before it occurs" .

The purpose of the organization that South Africa runs is promote gender equality and the empowerment of women. It was established in 2010 to accelerate the process of improving the living conditions of the female collective around the world and its actions always start from the awareness that women are often victims of violence and discrimination and are poorly represented in the processes of decision making.

Violence as a pandemic in the world

Health, enthusiasm, optimism, vitality, encouragement, equality and unity are the psychological values associated with the color chosen for the campaign. With this and the motto "paint the world of orange", an appeal has been made through the media, which in turn will be responsible for spreading a message of awareness and launching a civic mobilization. The actions will begin to be visible as soon as possible, since every 25th of November the Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls is celebrated all over the world. The infographics of the appeal issued by the UN refer to the problem as a "global pandemic that takes many forms".

What leads to the generation of that nomenclature? Or better, what is behind it? As expected: chilling figures. One in three women is the victim of physical or sexual violence by their partner and, since 2012, these are the authors of one of every two cases of murder. It is hard to believe that only 52 countries have hitherto explicitly penalized rape within marriage. Also that there are around 2,600 million women and girls who live in countries where spousal rape is not yet penalized. These things lead the executive director of the UN to affirm convincingly that "violence against women and girls continues to be the most tolerated violation of human rights."

Visible actions against violence

For all the above reasons, it is important that the help becomes visible. The UN encourages the Administration, associations, business leaders, ministers and teachers to establish zero tolerance policies against domestic violence. We can start by making available to those who need different itinerant help stations, as has been done these days in crowded places such as the Moncloa public transport interchange in the city of Madrid. It is already known that, for example, the drivers and conductors of the tuktuk of Cambodia, the football stars in Turkey, the officials and police officers in Albania, the schoolchildren of South Africa and Pakistan and hundreds of thousands more people throughout the country. world are taking positions.

Your bit to stop the violence

Social networks, which have done so much damage in other circumstances, can be of great help on this occasion. On a personal basis, thanks to them, we can contribute our bit. Get dressed in orange and use the hashtag #orangetheworld to shout to the world that you're willing to stop a problem that often constitutes one of the main threats of social imbalance. Do you remember that best seller by Albert Espinosa? He titled it The Yellow World and he talked about dreams and how they are fulfilled with will and determination. Today the world is dyed orange and our goal is the same. If we work together we can get it. Remember that initiatives like this simplify the task of explaining to our children the importance of fighting for the injustices of the world and to lead good behavior subject to positive values that in the future they will also be responsible for transmitting.
