How to avoid heat stroke in babies and children

As in summer the food is different, there are different ways that we can take at home to protect our children from the heat, as recalled from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Therefore, we summarize the main tips in this Decalogue against heat so you can prepare for the arrival of summer.

1. Hydration: your child must be hydrated. If you are an infant, you usually do not need water, but you can offer it to them since they will only accept it if they are thirsty. If it is bigger, it is necessary that you always carry fresh water and stimulate it to drink it.

2. Clothing: from now on, the clothes with which you see your child should be light, better that it be little, and cotton.

3. Fresh space: plan to have some cool space at home for your child. If necessary, change the site cradle and put it in the coolest place in the house.

4. Rest: the heat tends to make us feel fatigued, so it is recommended to leave more time than usual to rest.

5. Ventilation: ventilate the house early in the morning and late in the afternoon, because at other times what you will do is leave the heat to enter the house.

6. Air conditioners: Avoid air conditioners, it is better to use fans that renew or cool the air. If you do not have or prefer air conditioners, remember to put them soft of speed and temperature: never below 25 degrees. It will take longer to refresh the room but it will not be done so aggressively.

7. Bathroom: Tempered-fresh water baths (not cold) to refresh it is another way to fight the heat.

8. Wipes: spraying the child with water or giving him a wet wipe from time to time also helps in case of not having the shower nearby.

9. Ride: Avoid going outside in the hottest hours of heat (between 12.00 and 17.00) and, when you do, look for the shadows. It is also advisable to avoid baby backpacks, as you will transmit heat to the baby.

10. Car: Never leave your child alone in the car when it is hot. The temperature inside the vehicle can turn it into a deadly trap, even if you think it will take a short time. When you go to ride in it, if it is very hot, cool it before with air conditioning.
