The reality of urban tribes

Theurban tribes arise from the desire of young people to achieve a dream identity, and find in these social groups. The book "Subculturcide. Love and live in Madrid in 2010", by Andrea Ferrer, tries to put on a face and explain what are the new youth movements that have appeared in recent years and that are constantly evolving.

The urban tribes began to develop in large cities, hence its name, but now its territory is the outskirts due to the growth of large cities. They are characterized by following an ideology and by a way of dressing that is very marked and different from one another. In addition, young people have it easy to contact the movements for which they can feel interest, since they have Internet for it.

The phenomenon of urban tribes and radical movements has to do with the aesthetics that they show and that makes them easily distinguishable, but these groups are much more than a pose: these movements offer young people concrete and on many occasions, linked to violence and intolerance.

Young people with a new identity sign

Adolescents and young people with little family and social roots need to find an identity with which to feel someone within a group. Thus they change the way they dress and adopt a series of attitudes that give them a different personality.

Other interests that lead young people to belong to a urban tribe are the need for respect and admiration, something that is usually related to radical movements, which have a particular ideology.

Common characteristics of urban tribes

Although the urban tribes may seem quite different from each other, they all have characteristics that unite them in their way of behaving.

1. Marginality. This marginality supposes separation and separation. At first, the separation will be partial, since young people who enter an urban tribe still need to maintain family ties, at least to ensure survival. Later those ties will gradually separate. As a result of this marginality, there will be a tendency towards antisocial behavior.

2. The rebellion. They all see society as something hypocritical and meaningless. For this reason, they rebel against established norms, although on the other hand, they faithfully follow certain behavior patterns.

Ideas and transgression of urban tribes

Each urban tribe cultivates certain ideas, depending on which their activities, musical tastes and clothing revolve. Some groups make violence their badge, while others prefer political or cultural activity. In all the tribes there is an affirmation of the self and a defense of the values of the group, which give security to the young person who seeks to feel identified.

Regarding the issue of violence, many radical movements see this as a way of transgression and of directing society's attention towards them. Vandalism, destruction and burning of street furniture and clashes with other groups are part of its reason for being.

Other groups take violence beyond vandalism and travel through cities in search of "enemies" to attack. Sometimes, the aggressiveness of the groups does not come by the actions they commit, but by the aesthetics they exhibit: extreme makeup, hairstyles of colors and strange cuts, striking clothes, tattoos, piercings, etc. It is the fast track that these young people have to make known to others the ideas that follow.
