The reward of higher education: higher salaries

Exams, jobs, stress ... Higher education is not an easy path, and sometimes we can see how our children get frustrated and even consider throwing in the towel. However, they should not do so and we have to support them in not abandoning their careers. One reason may be the reward after studying at the University: those with higher education have better salaries.

So says an OECD report that states that in the 34 countries that belong to the Organization for Cooperation and Development young people who have gone through college have better salaries than your peers with lower qualifications.

It is true that not in all countries the differences in salaries between one and the other are the same. Thus, it is in Brazil, Chile, Hungary, Turkey and the United States where it is more profitable to study a career: the graduates charge much more and, therefore, are highly valued.

Although it is true that Spain is one of the countries where there are less differences between university students and other workers who do not have higher education, this is due to the increase in university students in the country (there are many, and not so many jobs), something that is happening in a generalized way throughout the OECD and that the authors of the report assure that it has positive consequences both for people and for our society.

The crisis and salaries of university students

It is true that we have gone through a time of economic crisis that has been very hard and has even caused the emigration of many young Spaniards. However, this report shows that the crisis has caused a higher valuation of workers with higher education: while in 2008 they received a general 53 percent more than those who had minor studies, in 2012 the percentage was 55 percent.

In addition, the text ensures that The crisis has affected more negatively those who did not have university studies: they have seen their salaries reduced at a general level. According to the study, in 2008 those who did not have higher education earned 22 percent than those who did have this level, a percentage that became 24 percent lower in 2012.

Higher education, higher salaries

If you ever see your child unmotivated by a bad teacher, stressed by tests and a lot of work to do ... encourage him, and this can be a good reasoning: the highest educational level not only facilitates inclusion in the workplace, but has long-term positive consequences.

The OECD itself ensures that those who do not have higher education or university "They can not wait" for their salary to increase as the years go by. However, this does occur among workers with university studies and, in fact, the older the employees are, the more the differences are noticed: a person between 55 and 64 years old with higher education can get up to 76 percent more than another person of the same age but with a lower instruction.
