The Erasmus number descends for the first time

The cuts in the Erasmus program has resulted in a decrease of 0.7 percent from the previous one in the number of students who participated in the 2012-13 academic year. This drop of 0.7 percent has been the first decline after a record of consecutive increases since 2007, according to the latest statistics published by the Ministry of Education.

The funding of Erasmus scholarships has been cut by 28.1 million euros. Specifically, the Erasmus program of the 2012-13 academic year distributed a total of 105.7 million euros in Spain, compared to 133.8 million for the student scholarships of the previous year.
Of the total budget, 40.8 million were contributed by the European Commission (a 13.06% growth compared to the money provided in the 2011-12 academic year) and 64.9 million from other sources, among which the Ministry stands out of Education, which gave 37.4 million (-40.51% compared to the 2011-12 academic year); and the autonomous communities, which granted 15.2 million (-28.50%).

The precariousness of Erasmus scholarships

The reasons for the decrease in the number of students who have applied for an Erasmus scholarship this year are based precisely on the cuts, since the amount of the Erasmus grant does not cover the minimum economic needs of the majority of students. And the amount of the Erasmus scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year amounted to 145 euros per month for a scholarship and amounted to 300 euros for an internship. Thus, while in the 2012-13 academic year it counted in Spain in the aforementioned course with 39,249 beneficiaries, in the 2011-12 academic year the applications reached 39,545.
In numbers, in the 2012-13 academic year, the greatest decrease in the number of Erasmus students was recorded among students from Castilla-La Mancha (-36.3%), Canarias (-19.6%) and La Rioja ( -12.1%), while the highest increases were recorded in the Balearic Islands (34.1%) and Asturias (23.4%).

Specifically, the number of university Erasmus students decreased by 0.8% (a total of 35,819), which represented 91.2% of the total of these mobilities; the Erasmus of Vocational Training (2,772) fell by 2.7% and only those belonging to artistic education rose (667), with an increase of 11.2%.

Italy, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, favorite destinations

Four European countries top the list of destinations most requested by Spanish students to leave Erasmus. Italy, Germany, France and the United Kingdom are the countries with the highest demand.

Launch of the Ibero-American Erasmus Program

As of next year, it is expected to launch the PIMA (Academic Exchange and Mobility Program), an initiative for Latin American students that began with the Pablo Neruda program, and which was agreed in Mexico at the end of August, in the Summit of Veracruz, to institute a new mobility program: the Paulo Freire. Each country, each office, each region is now planning the implementation of this program.
