School uniform, advantages and disadvantages

The school uniform seems to be gaining ground in many schools, due to the convenience for many parents not having to think what clothes the children wear the next day. In contrast, many other parents see the uniform as an additional expense, especially when you have to replace the garments several times in the same course because they remain small, broken or lost.

In any case, Carmen Calvo, director of Communication of the school Fuenllana, tells us what reasons lead parents and schools to choose or not to implement the school uniform, advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of the school uniform

- Comfort. It is not necessary to think about what to put the child or he loses time to prepare each day the clothes he wants to take to school. He gains speed in the mornings when dressing and in the evenings when preparing his clothes.

- Comparisons are avoided among the other students for the clothes that each one carries.

- Provides some discipline and children learn to know how to wear the right clothes in every situation.

- Respect to the others: Not all students have the same economic situation or tastes and the uniform equals them.

- Allows identification to a school center. In some situations, such as excursions and outings in general, the uniform makes it possible to identify students from the same school.

The drawbacks of the school uniform

The reasons why you choose not to wear a uniform are:

- Economic reasons: It's more expensive to buy a uniform than to dress the child with a simple cowboy and a T-shirt.

- Lack of decision and autonomy when dressing, which may lead to parents having to educate the student to dress outside the school setting.

- Some people think that boys can not express their individuality. Schools should teach children to think in freedom, so forcing them to wear the same clothes does not contribute to this end, since the child should have their own thoughts and not accept the thoughts of the majority.

- There are parents who perceive sexism in many uniforms, by forcing girls to go with a skirt, as well as considering it a return to the past.
