The negative effects of the crisis on children

The strong economic recession, like the one we are experiencing in recent years around the world, can lead to unexpected negative consequences for the lives of children and adolescents. Mental health of the minorsis damaged due to the crisis period when it affects the family completely and the disorders manifest themselves every time at younger ages.

Disorders that triggers the economic crisis in the minors

The irruption of the crisis in our society and the aggravation of the economic situation of many families, lead to the appearance of mental health problems in children and adolescents.

- Anxiety. It is characterized by excessive concern because of the current situation of the family. An anxiety pronounced in children and adolescents may end up linked to suffering from depression.

- Alcoholism. Alcohol consumption is becoming more and more premature in adolescents as a way of escaping from their problems.

- Child abuse. According to a study carried out in the journal Pediatrics, the conditions of poverty or stress increase the cases of violence, and in this case, to a large extent against children.

- Overlook. The parents end up focusing more on their worries than on the attention of the children and this is the cause that causes the children to end up suffering deficiencies that will finally affect their affective development.

Causes of mental health problems in times of crisis

According to a study carried out with more than 100,000 children and 35,000 families by the Federation of Child and Adolescent Education Attention Entities (FEDAIA) in collaboration with the University of Barcelona, families focus on cover the basic needs of the home and neglect other aspects, even more important, that benefit the development of children and that allows them to maintain a quality affective bond with them.

Since the FEDAIA it is pointed out that the deterioration of mental health is only one aspect of the lack of investment in social policies aimed at promoting the well-being of children. That is, the current precarious situation of our children can not be improved if we have less than half of the budget we should have to improve the prevention, detection and care of children's mental health problems. and teenagers on time.
