The importance of playing with costumes for children

Playing the costumes involves changing roles, putting yourself in the shoes of the other. It is a game that greatly favors the social and emotional development of children and that also supposes a magnificent communication channel with which to know your inner world and liberalize emotions.

In addition, until the age of six, children do not completely distinguish the real world from which they are part of their fantasy, and that is why in many cases you will discover that your child tells you incredible stories or events that have not taken place. This is a product of his overflowing imagination and putting it into practice is fantastic for his ability to invent.

The freedom to be distracted for children

For the symbolic game to work, we must forget to impose rules and let them be the ones to take the baton.

1. You should let him choose the costumes. And the possibility of making costumes at home. This already tells you a lot about your likes and preferences, and the way of "interpreting the role" will reveal to you how he perceives that character. For example, if your child dresses like father or mother, through imitation, he will be showing you the image he has of you, how he perceives you and is a very good information about how you are doing it.

2. Dressing up helps the children to overcome their fears and difficulties. It has always been said that to overcome a fear the best thing is to face it. So they get into the skin of that character or person who scares them and It helps them to dramatize and overcome it.

3. Playing to be another also fosters their capacity for empathy, helps them to put themselves in the place of others and understand their feelings, their concerns and their way of acting.

It is very important that you let your children they dress up with freedom and do not put limits on them if they want to do it very often, not only in Carnival. Allow them to choose the real or imaginary character whose skin they want to get into and, if they ask, participate in their game. So you will be stimulating your imaginationand creativity, the ability to invent, the initiative, their social skills and, in addition, you will be allowing them to externalize all their thoughts and emotions. And all with a simple disguise, do not you think it's extraordinary?
