Social Security allocated 478.3 million to maternity and paternity benefits

Social Security allocated more than 423.3 million euros in the first quarter to the payment of economic benefits for maternity, 3.2% less than in the same period last year, and 54.9 million euros to paternity , with a decrease of 4.5%.

In total, the amount spent in the first quarter of the year to pay these benefits exceeded 478.3 million euros, according to data released Thursday by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

The National Institute of Social Security managed 77,685 maternity benefits until March, 5.1% less than in the same period of 2011, while paternity processes totaled 65,853, with a decrease of 5.8%.

Of the maternity benefits package managed in the first quarter, the largest part, 76,401, corresponded to permits enjoyed by the mother (-5%), compared to 1,284 (-9.9%) that were requested by the father after granting him the mother the right.

The Autonomous Communities that registered the highest number of maternity leave in the first quarter were Cataluña (14,001), Andalucía (13,875), Madrid (12,408) and Comunidad Valenciana (7,758).

In relative terms, only in Navarra (+ 5.7%), La Rioja (+ 5.6%) and the Canary Islands (+ 0.7%) more permits were registered than in the first quarter of 2011. In the rest of the communities , maternity leave fell with respect to the previous year, with the most marked decreases being those of Comunidad Valenciana (-10.8%), Baleares (-9.3%) and Murcia (-6.9%).

On the other hand, the number of paternity benefits managed in the first quarter by Social Security amounted to 65,853, 5.8% less, with a cost of almost 55 million euros (-4.5%).

With the approval of the Equality Law, in force since March 24, 2007, a permit was established for the father independent of the mother's. This paternity leave, of 15 days, is compatible with maternity leave, shared at the option of the mother.

The Autonomous Communities in which the greatest number of parents accepted paternity leave were Catalonia (12,658), Madrid (10,623), Andalucía (10,373), Comunidad Valenciana (6,386) and País Vasco (3,907), while the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla were those that registered less subsidies for paternity, with 70 and 85 processes, respectively.

On the other hand, the number of parents who took maternity leave fell by 9.9% in the first quarter. The regions where the number of parents who agreed to maternity leave increased the most were La Rioja (+ 100%) and Extremadura (+ 6.2%). On the contrary, the decreases were led by Asturias (-25.7%) and Comunidad Valenciana (-23%).

Both in maternity and paternity, the benefit consists of a subsidy equivalent to the full salary of the worker or worker and is paid directly by the National Institute of Social Security.
