Keys to control migraine
A healthy, varied and complete diet and not alter the rhythms and schedules of meals and sleep are two key elements to control migraine, a disabling pathology. The third is to control the food we eat, as certain foods subjected to fermentation (wine, vinegar, olives, bread, yogurt, cheese ...) can trigger episodes of migraine, in some cases.
Migraine, a disabling pathology
Headaches, among which is migraine, has been one of the diseases of recent "recognition" in society. Until recently, migraine has been an undervalued and misdiagnosed disease, being a very disabling pathology. Just one example: chronic migraine is characterized by the appearance of headaches for 15 or more days a month, of which at least 8 are migraine.
Migraine affects 2.3 percent of the population and is more common among middle-aged women, largely due to the hormonal changes they suffer throughout their lives.
Its symptoms produce great disability, causing nausea, vomiting and hypersensitivity to light and noise. Today, it is considered the second cause of work absenteeism in our country.
Causes of migraine
The clinical studies launched to learn more about the causes of migraine, show that certain foods, especially those that have been subjected to a fermentation process, can act as triggers of migraine episodes. In this case, if the patient detects that some episodes occur systematically after having consumed a food, your specialist will recommend that you stop taking it, but from the outset, in what refers to the diet, it is recommended to follow a diet healthy, varied and balanced and, above all, complete. It is important not to miss any food because fasting can act as a trigger for an episode of migraine.
The foods that can trigger migraine are: dairy products (especially certain cheeses), products with monosodium glutamate GMS (present in Chinese food), chocolate, foods that contain tyramine (red wine, cured cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs and legumes), fruits (avocado, citrus and bananas), meats with nitrates (bacon, sausages for hot dogs, salami and cured meats), onions and, in general, those processed, fermented, marinated and marinated.
How can we prevent and treat migraine?
Migraine presents with a severe headache but is often preceded, and sometimes combined, with other symptoms such as irritability, restlessness, nausea or lack of appetite, which appear about 10 to 30 minutes before the onset of pain (period called aura) or prodrome).
To prevent or try to control these migraine attacks, from the Neurology Service of La Milagrosa Hospital it is recommended:
- Carry the same meal and sleep schedules, since the alterations of them can produce migraine attacks.
- Try to control stress levels, since it is an important trigger of this pathology.
- Take the medication as soon as possible.
- Go to the specialist who will make a diagnosis and explain the treatment and measures to take.
