Young Spaniards, among the most prudent on the road

Obtaining a driving license is one of the great milestones in the lives of adolescents and their parents. However, being a novice driver triggers fears and worries. In the first months of having the driver's license, the risk of collision among adolescents is high and one of the causes are:the inexperience and its lack of conscience.

Young Spaniards at the wheel

Young Spaniards are among the most prudent at the wheel of Europe, surpassing Poles, South Africans and Russians in terms of compliance with speed limits, according to a study by Goodyear. Forty percent of young Spaniards admit to stepping on the accelerator too much. In the same way, they are less likely to test the maximum speed of their cars, only 19 percent do so, which can be regulated by law or radars. Therefore, the lack of awareness is the main cause of accidents in young Spaniards.

Lack of awareness, cause of accidents in young people

According to a study conducted by the tire manufacturer Goodyear and the European Association of Driving Schools (EFA) to road safety instructors, The main cause of dangerous driving in young people is the lack of awareness of accidents. Young people are twice as likely to be involved in accidents. The main causes are:

- Lack of awareness of the consequences of accidents among novice drivers

- Drug and alcohol consumption.

- Distraction by mobile phones.

- Lack of experience.

- Delusions of immortality.

- The idealization by the popular culture of reckless driving.

The road to road safety

Goodyear and the EFA are coming together to improve road safety for young people. They presented a study at the end of 2013, based on the opinions of the instructors on how to improve road safety for young people. From this survey was born the book "First step to drive safely: Improve road safety for young drivers", which calls on the governments of the eurozone to include information related to the maintenance of the vehicle itself in the examinations , as well as, the search for an improvement in all test models.

The environment and education in road safety

Parents continue to exercise a positive attitude in their children once they have taken their driver's license, but differences arise between those who still live with their parents and those who have already become independent. Young people who live on their own are more aggressive behind the wheel compared to those who live with their parents. Also, those young drivers who dropped out at an early age, up to 18 years old, son more prone to comment errors and to disobey the signals than those who continued with their studies.
