New England Journal refers two clinical cases of girls who presented vision loss periodically. One of them is that of a 22-year-old woman whose clinical picture indicated that her right eye was occasionally blind. The different medical examinations showed total normality and no evidence pointed to a condition that was the cause of this problem.


The same situation was presented by another woman of 40 years who suffered cases of occasional blindness with episodes of 15 minutes. Like the other person, the medical tests revealed nothing that caused the clinicians to work hard to discover what caused these vision losses. The answer came when both were asked about their customs at home.

Each eye, a different function

The doctors in both cases detected a common symptom between both women that could explain their temporary vision loss: both used the smartphone in bed at night. According to specialists, his blindness could be caused by a simple reason: each eye had a different function when it comes to checking their smartphones in bed.


According to the ophthalmologists, the fact that at certain times these girls were placed on one side with one eye on the pillow and another fixed on the screen of their mobile made each eyeball get used to two different environments: pillow and smartphone light . Once they finished this activity with the device, both eyes had to get used to the same medium again.

This process in which both eyes had to focus on the same amount of light lasted several minutes during which the patients had this sensation of blindness while the eyeballs were put on par. A response that shows that the dependency that has been generated with these devices can have negative effects on us.

Visual tips for consulting a smartphone

The main thing that derives from the abuse of the smartphone is fatigue and visual fatigue, especially in situations where there is little light and eyes are concentrated on this screen. These symptoms worsen as the hours that these people are in front of their cell phone increase and that lead to headaches and red eyes, in addition to, in some cases, dizziness. These problems can be avoided if you follow certain advice from ophthalmologists:


1. Font size: A smaller size means that the view has to work harder and get tired before, especially if the device is small. There is also a problem of bringing the mobile phone too close to our face, causing the eye muscles to work more when refocusing.
