Large families, all discounts and bonuses

Spanish law understands that a family is numerous from the third child, distinguishing between large families of a general nature (up to four children) and those of a special category (more than five). There is a title or card that certifies that its holders are members of a large family, which brings with it a multitude of benefits in Spain, in the different autonomous communities and in the municipalities.

The large family document is issued by the autonomous communities and can be requested as soon as you have your third child or if you fulfill any of the cases included in the Law for the Protection of Large Families, such as having two children, but one with disability, for example.

Main discounts and bonuses for large families in Spain

At the state level, the aforementioned law has a multitude of benefits for large families, mainly in the form of discounts and bonuses in public companies, although there are some more:

- Discount between 20 and 50 percent in Renfe and some bus companies.
- Discount between 20 and 50 percent in maritime transport of cabotage (within the country).
- Discount between five and 10 percent on airline tickets for flights within the national territory.
- Bonus of 45 percent of Social Security contributions by hiring caregivers of family members. To be able to access this assistance in the case of large families of a general nature, both parents must work outside the home, while this is not necessary in families with more than five children.
- Extension of paternity leave to 20 days.
- Preferential score in public tenders as those developed to access scholarships or for the admission of students in educational centers.
- Benefits in housing matters, as preferential access to rental subsidies or the establishment of special conditions for the acquisition of protected or used homes.
- Discounts on public prices and fees, like the university ones. On this occasion, large families of a special nature are exempt from this payment.
- Discounts in state museums: Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen Bornemisza, National Archaeological, Altamira, and a long etcetera.

In addition to these discounts, there are also benefits for large families in the Autonomous Communities and municipalities. For example, in many autonomous, local or even private museums apply bonuses to the large families or its members.
