The first baby is born after a uterus transplant

Having a baby after a uterus transplant is now a reality. The first baby born in a transplanted uterus to a Swedish woman of 35 years, who was born without a uterus, has just been born. Her ovaries worked perfectly and she became pregnant by fecundation in vitro last spring The baby, a male, was born prematurely, in week 32 of pregnancy, and weighed 1.8 kilos.

A Spanish gynecologist in the medical team

The scientific journal The Lancet just published that it's about the first woman in the world in giving birth to a baby after receiving a uterus transplant donated by a friend of the family of 61 years, which had reached menopause seven years before giving this organ to the future mother.

The Swedish doctorMats Brannstrom, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, is the author of the transplant. Among the members of his team is a Spanish, the gynecologist at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia, César Díaz, who has participated in four of the uterine transplants performed by the Swedish team to date.

A second pregnancy is possible

One year after receiving the uterus transplant, the team of gynecologists led by Dr. Brännström, transferred a single embryo to the mother, and the pregnancy test was positive three weeks later.

The pregnancy developed normally until week 31 of gestation, in which an episode of rejection during pregnancy was found, which was treated with corticosteroids. The future mother was working until the day before the birth of the baby, who had to go two weeks. And although cesarean delivery was planned for week 34, a maternal preeclampsia in pregnancy, with very high blood pressure, forced to interrupt at week 32.

The male baby was born without any complications and with normal measurements for a premature baby of week 32, since he weighed 1,775 kg and measured 40 centimeters. To the feeling of happiness of the parents and of the whole Swedish gynecology team, the hopeful statements of Brännström join, who has assured that "we believe that it is safe to try a second pregnancy".
